Our new musical, The Paparazzi is closing this weekend and while that is sad, we had a good run. I will miss the happy voices of the 16 strong cast and musicians coming in to get ready for each performance. They have had such a great vibe, laughing and joking with each other and hopefully creating lasting bonds - the type only created in these creative worlds I have found.
The show deals with the colliding circumstances of ambition, youth and unscrupulous media practices with dire consequences unfortunately. It shines a light on how our choices have deep and lasting effects on those around us and with the advent of social media those effects are increased to levels that are quite frankly unfathomable - creating potentially devastating situations. We have always lived in a world where words and actions matter, but everything is now potentially amplified so that unthinking, funny, but cruel post on any platform that suddenly goes viral hurts the subject of the post far more than ever before and lingers far longer than ever before too.
The Paparazzi tries to show that there is still redemption in this world and that we can pivot and make new choices, especially if we take responsibility for our actions and do our best not to repeat careless or unscrupulous actions. I know it's just a show, but I wish life mirrored this arc more often, with the events of the last few months ever present on our minds and in the news, I wish people would learn from their past actions and make choices that are kinder and more humane.
We have 3 shows left (tonight, tomorrow afternoon and tomorrow night), with very limited seats available, but I suggest you rock up any way and try to get a ticket because that shows hope and we need more hope in this world, it also shows tenacity and gosh do we need more of that too and it shows that you are willing to take a chance on a good thing, again, we need to take more chances on good things. If there are truly no seats left for you then have no fear, you will find yourself in the heart of the Broadway district with many wonderful food and beverage options available to you so not all will be lost.
Finally, well done to everyone who worked on this fantastic production. We did it! This show has made people smile, laugh and cry - what more do we want from theater? We created a space for creatives to shine and for that I am eternally grateful. Thank you for supporting AMT Theater and this wonderful production of The Paparazzi.
