AMT Theatre presents Mary Goggin’s multiple award-winning show, “Runaway Princess, a Hopeful Tale of Heroin, Hooking and Happiness.” 2022 “Once upon a time, there was a Princess born to a King and Queen who were banished from the island of Ériu and forced to flee to America in a coffin ship.” Former New York City call girl Mary Goggin shares the true, award-winning story of her traumatic Bronx Irish Catholic upbringing, alcoholism, drug addiction and prostitution. The multitude of characters she encountered in her journey from utter darkness to absolute joy, spring to life in this one-woman tour de force, all told with dark humor, unflinching honesty and unsentimental pathos.

Now, A few years ago, I decided to write a one-woman show based on my life. The result is Runaway Princess which I am bringing to AMT.  Irish Catholic schooling and upbringing, theatre degree with 25 years as an artist and 35 years of sobriety  prepared me to write and share this powerful solo show.

I am instinctual; I am a healer. The fact I can stand in the spotlight and tell the tales of my life is testament to this. On the other side of addiction hell, sharing my secrets, I realized that when I did I got better and stronger.

This is not really about me; it gives others permission to share their story, and to heal. I’m told I am brave, and maybe I am. Not a Purple Heart brave. This is an inner journey. When I was little I wanted to be an archaeologist, digging for the truth. That’s what I do.

Also, I did not want to be on my deathbed saying “I wish I had”.

Oh, and Sister Mary Bridget, wherever you are. I am sorry for robbing the Sisters of Mercy cashbox. Nothing personal. I loved Rosscarbery, especially your elocution class.

It came in real handy. Thank you.

If you plan to spend any time with a friend or family member with a drinking to drug issue well I promise this show will change you.

“There is a moment, most years during the Fringe, when you realize you are listening to a story which is (a) true, (b) told by the person to whom these events happened and (c) completely extraordinary. This year, for me, it’s Mary Goggin, with her all-American tale of drinking, drugs and prostitution and how (incredibly) she overcame it all. The SCOTSMAN

“This is indeed a tale of hope that deserved to be shared…

because of her honesty, though, it’s hard to judge her choices. If anything, we are in awe of her resilience and perseverance” EVERYTHING-THEATRE.CO.UK
